Nick Ntuli

Nick Phaba Ntuli is a Durban-based illustrator, street artist and graphic designer. He finds inspiration in both the contemporary and traditional visual aesthetic of Africa and, through his illustrative style, captures a vibrant energy and resilient spirit. His subject matter revolves mainly around the colourful characters of the Emkhumbane township where he grew up. “Everyday people inspire me, and this is my way of giving back and lifting up communities,” he says.

Nick has always enjoyed drawing. “I spent more time creating illustrations than playing sports when I was a kid, drawing soccer players, cars and cartoon characters,” he says. This passion had him pursue a degree in graphic design at the Durban University of Technology. But even while still at school he began taking on projects, building a portfolio that led to assignments for leading brands, and a current job at an advertising agency.

“It’s an honour to have been able to draw the illustrations for The Justice Desk,” says Nick of his 5 Compassionate Communities commission. “Especially as it’s an organisation that deeply cares about empowering everyday people to understand and defend their human rights. I hope my illustrations bring pride and joy to people who engage with them, and I hope they inspire people to see Africa in a different light.”
